I just got off the phone with Susan to tell her “Thanks to you and Jim, I finally feel at home again!” Last year I moved from San Mateo to San Diego with my biotech company, an opportunity I couldn’t resist. I had worked with Susan in the past to transform my two bedroom condo in downtown San Mateo into a homey retreat from the sterile lab environment where I worked. Soon after moving to San Diego, I bought a house and worked with a designer to renovate my dated 1970’s home in the suburbs. After moving in, I still had to finish furnishing and making the place my own. But I felt at a loss as to what to do next, and was very stressed as to how to finish and didn’t know how to find the next best thing to Susan in San Diego who could help. I took a chance, called Susan to enlist her help and was absolutely thrilled to hear that she and Jim would be able to personally finish my project. And when I say help, I mean multiple visits from them to work with the furniture and artwork I already had, to add fabulous pieces that complemented my style and to choose wall colors that would transform my new home into the cozy retreat I enjoyed in San Mateo, just on a larger scale. I would say that Susan and Jim give the most complete service there is in terms of total design, from furniture placement, hanging artwork, selecting lighting, finding unique furniture and fabrics to complete my new home. It is a joy to watch Susan walk from room to room, and to see the wheels turning to make each room unique and special, to make the most of awkward spaces, and to create a flow within my home that makes sense. I found it easy to give myself over and trust her artistic process. I now have a house that is warm, cozy and hugs me from the moment I walk in the front door until I close my eyes at night in my peaceful bedroom. There are still a few details to complete next year when my budget allows. For example, I will need window treatments in certain rooms and since this is another of Susan’s specialties I have no doubt she will make them fabulous. Until then I am thankful to Susan and Jim for making the process as easy and stress free as possible considering the fact that they have been able to accomplish so much in just a few months from as far away as Livermore.

Our interaction with Castle Comfort started 7-1/2 years ago when we picked up their business card off the store front door. Through the years we have thoroughly enjoyed working with Susan, Jim and their staff on a redo of our home’s interior. Susan even got involved in selecting the color for our backyard deck. We were very tired of our white walls and some of our 20-year old furniture. The Castle Comforts decorators helped us select drapes, carpeting, flooring (carpet, hardwood and linoleum), lighting, wall hangings, paint (lots of color/no more white walls), and furniture. Susan even helped us right down to selecting the right size TV screen for our theatre/family room. Not at any time did we feel pressured to accept her suggestions. Our opinions were always respected. Everyone on their staff is professional, warm, friendly and down to earth. We would not hesitate to recommend Castle Comforts for home design needs.

Both Susan and Jim Duthie are AMAZING!! Susan has a truly extraordinary talent with creativity, thinking out of the box and takes the time to understand what will be true and authentic to the client. Susan provided consultation for Meadows Method Intuitive Pilates, Inc. studio and came up with ideas that we would have never thought of on our own! Thank goodness for her because she recommended a beautiful antique white color to brighten the studio (historic building) with a stunning large canvas painted with the Meadows Method logo. We could not be happier with Susan's recommendations and creations! We come into work each morning and feel the beauty which makes us incredibly happy as well as our clients. I can't say enough about my experience with working with Susan on our master bedroom. She understood exactly the feeling and the look I was trying to accomplish and came up with a beautiful combination of fabrics, wall colors, art work and carpeting. A very dreary room was transformed into a stunning master bedroom! Thanks to Susan it surpassed anything I could have imagined.

What a lucky day it was when I happened upon Jim and Susan’s shop on 2nd Street. My daughter was getting married in the back yard in just a few weeks and while I’m thrilled to decorate my yard and pull it all together into a beautiful space I cannot do the same with the inside of my home to save my life. After spending 3 days, dawn to closing, scouring the area, I hadn’t found ANYthing to put on my walls or bring my living space together that didn’t look cluttered or undersized or blank or boring. I had no idea how to fix it and because I was paying for a wedding and had planted several hundred plants in the yard, my budget was very small. I walked into Castle Comforts and told my tale of woe to Jim who was happy to listen. He set up an appointment with Susan and really worked with my timing. He assured me that I would only pay for time she spent with me so the cost wouldn’t get away from me. I knew I couldn’t afford a decorator and besides the fact that I had this notion they “over” decorated. I like a cozy and inviting look, not a bunch of “stuff” and not a busy look so was nervous when Jim suggested Susan come over and do her thing. My desperateness won out and I was down to the wire so I took the plunge. Susan came to my home, seemed to take in my things and colors and in a short time had a sense of my taste. She suggested I move a couple items I already had and picked out paint colors for the walls (colors I never would have thought could be right for such a small space but work so well!) and told me she had the perfect art for the two walls that needed attention. To my delight one was ordered for another client who changed their mind so I got it 50% off. She had people to help paint but we opted to do it ourselves to keep the cost down. She and Jim hung the pictures and the window treatments and ta da! it was done AND I wasn’t bankrupt when it was all said and done. What I couldn’t do in 3 full days, Susan did in what seemed to be about 20 minutes and then we just had to paint and hang. Thank you both for making something so painful to me into something I enjoy every day and receive compliments on so often. I have been singing Susan’s praises for 3 years and would do it all over again. It’s such a freedom to leave this “chore” in Susan’s hands.
